Hampton Convention & Visitor Bureau

Vibrant Hampton traces its beginnings to 1607 when the first permanent English colonists visited before they continued upriver to Jamestown. Celebrating its 400th anniversary next year, Hampton was officially established in 1610 and is America's oldest, continuous, English-speaking settlement. Throughout its history, Hampton has enticed visitors and would-be residents with its serene waterfront, bountiful seafood and tradition of hospitality.

From touring Civil War Trails sites, to exploring the final frontier, Hampton presents an exciting array of family-friendly activities. Begin at the Hampton History Museum to sample four hundred years of history on the Chesapeake Bay. Then let your hands explore at the Virginia Air & Space Center, with aircraft, space artifacts and awesome IMAX films. Cross the historic moat and climb the walls surrounding Fort Monroe.

Hampton promises an enriching and entertaining experience, regardless of your age and interest. Major annual entertainment events like the Blackbeard Pirate Festival and the Hampton Jazz Festival, both in June, and Hampton Bay Days in September, celebrate Hampton’s cultural and maritime heritage. Fine and cultural art is well represented at The American Theatre, Charles H. Taylor Arts Center, privately-owned galleries and Hampton University Museum, dating to 1868. The museum possesses a collection of more than 9,000 multicultural artifacts and fine, contemporary art.

While poised to leap toward the future, Hampton is proud of its distinctive past. The city's history aligns that of our nation, and visitors are encouraged to explore every bit of it. Call 800-800-2202 for a free Hampton Visitor Guide.
